Here is what my afternoons used to look like. Get home, keys on the bench, and reach up under my top to unhook the thing before I had even taken my shoes off. Some days I did it in the car. I am fifty-three and I had been doing that since my twenties, and I had stopped noticing it the way you stop noticing a noise you have lived with for years.
