I ordered the $39 bracelet fully intending to send it back. Then I sat down at the kitchen table and looked at it properly.

Here is the part most people leave out of these things: I did not want it to be good. I wanted to be right. I have been buying jewellery online for eleven years and I have been disappointed enough times to have developed a fairly settled opinion about anything advertised at half price.
So when I saw the Vintage Bird Rope Bracelet at $39.99, down from $79.99, my first thought was not "how lovely". It was: that is a ten dollar bracelet with a story attached. I ordered it anyway. I ordered it the way you order something so you can stop wondering, and I told my husband I would almost certainly be posting it back within the week.
It arrived on the Thursday. I took it out of the packet, sat down at the kitchen table where the light is good, and went through it properly, the way my father taught me to look at a secondhand watch. Six things. Here is what I found.
The birds are not three of the same bird
This was the first thing I checked, because it is where cheap charms give themselves away. I expected one flat stamped shape repeated three times, all facing the same way, all identical. They are not. The three of them sit at different angles on the branch, each with its own tail and its own tilt of the head, and the silver has been darkened down in the creases on purpose so there is some depth to it rather than that hard white shine you get on costume metal. It has weight, too. Not heavy, but it drops into your palm rather than floating there. Whoever made the mould for this thought about it for longer than they needed to.
