Three doctor visits, two pairs of 'supportive' shoes and a lot of quiet resignation — and my age had almost nothing to do with it.

Note: Read this BEFORE you accept that this is simply how your feet are now.
Somewhere around 57 I started treating my feet as a lost cause. They hurt in the morning, they hurt by the afternoon, and everyone I mentioned it to said a version of the same thing - well, you're not thirty anymore. So I stopped mentioning it. I bought a size up, I sat down more, I started saying no to things I used to say yes to.
I wasn't treating a problem. I was managing a decline I'd decided was permanent.
What changed my mind was an offhand comment from a physical therapist. She asked how many hours a day I spent standing on hard floors in shoes with no real support. I worked it out and it was around six. She said that would hurt at any age.
That was the first time in four years anyone had suggested my feet weren't the problem. I ordered Orthora that week. That was eight months ago.

"I'd spent four years being told it was my age. It took about three weeks in a different pair of shoes to find out it wasn't."
Hard floors don't care how old you are. Six hours a day standing on tile in unsupported shoes would hurt a twenty-five-year-old too - they'd just bounce back faster overnight. Orthora is built for standing, and that was the part nobody had ever addressed.

Every supportive pair I'd owned felt good for two hours and then went flat, and I'd taken that as proof my feet were beyond helping. These feel the same at hour 10 as they did at hour one. It turned out the shoes were giving up, not me.

I'd been blaming those on my age as well. They were compensating for feet that had nothing underneath them. Once the base was right they settled down, which told me plenty about what had actually been going on.

That first step out of bed was the thing I had most firmly accepted as permanent. It eased week by week. My feet were finally getting a chance to recover overnight instead of starting every day already sore.

My feet are a different size at 6pm than they are at 8am, and that isn't an age thing either - it happens to anyone who stands all day. The wide toe box lets them change instead of fighting them for it.

I hadn't noticed how cautious I'd become - shorter steps, a hand near the rail, avoiding anything that looked slick. Proper grip took that away. I stopped negotiating with every floor I crossed.

I'd already spent $400 on custom orthotics that helped for about three weeks, and I'd written that off as my age too. Hearing that podiatrists were recommending Orthora rather than another round of customs is what made me try one more thing. Someone who treats feet all day isn't putting their name on a gimmick.

Everything else collapsed inside 90 days, and every time it did I took it as more evidence that nothing would work for feet my age. Eight months of near-daily wear and these feel the way they did the day they arrived.

The orthotics lived in one pair of shoes I didn't enjoy putting on, so I skipped them constantly and then wondered why nothing improved. I wear these everywhere, which means the support is there for all six of those hours.

Three doctor visits, two pairs of supportive shoes, drugstore insoles and two rounds of custom orthotics - close to $1000 spent managing something I'd been told to accept. Orthora was the last pair I had to buy.
